Trailblazing Highland entrepreneur scoops prestigious industry award

Posted 18/03/16

A trailblazing young Scottish entrepreneur who founded a leading Highland plumbing and heating and renewable business has scooped a much-coveted award in the Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2016.

Lachlan McInnes, managing director of McInnes plumbing and Heating and McInnes Renewables Ltd, which is headquartered in Inverness, beat off stiff competition from 150 entries to win the Business Development Award in the Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2016.

The glitzy Scottish Renewables award-ceremony celebrates innovators and leaders in green energy and showcases the very best working in the sector. The awards dinner took place on Thursday 26 May at the Glasgow Science Centre.

After being made redundant in 2011, Lachlan, 29, paid to complete his own apprenticeship and founded McInnes Plumbing and Heating Ltd shortly after.

Lachlan’s father bought the determined entrepreneur his first van and he slowly managed to develop a good client base across the Highlands, mainly through word of mouth, and began to recruit employees.

In 2013, the young entrepreneur identified a gap in the market to supply innovative renewable energy to customers across Scotland, and McInnes Renewables Ltd was born.

Today, he employs seven members of staff and two apprentices, and the business has experienced huge growth in last 12 months.

Lachlan said: “I am absolutely delighted to have come home with the award in a category which saw so many entries. Renewable energy is something I am extremely passionate about, and I always strive to offer customers across Scotland the best, and most effective renewable energy choices at the most competitive prices.

“I believe that innovative energy choices must be sustainable and I strive to ensure that I offer the latest technology available in the sector to my customers.

“To be short-listed as a finalist in such prestigious awards really makes all the long hours, hard work and dedication worth it. It’s a real boost for the whole team, who work so hard.

“It was a real privilege to attend the award ceremony with some of my team members and I want to take the opportunity to congratulate all those short listed in all the categories, as all those businesses are making a great contribution to the renewable energy sector across Scotland.”
